The purpose is mainly to keep loose soil in place while at the same time allowing for drainage. There are several different types that range from very course netting to impervious membranes. Erecting a fence of netting material can also be used to prevent erosion by collecting the soil that is washed away by rain. These fences are also used a lot to keep sand dunes at beaches in place. The reason for doing this is because they act as a barrier during storm surges. Sand filled tubes are used to create a much sturdier barrier against sand erosion in some cases. Another use would be to keep layers in place in road building. If the different layers of soil where allowed to mix it could lead to ruts forming where soil shifts under pressure. They can also act as a barrier to tree roots and can be placed under ground to protect structures from roots growing into them. The permeability of sheet material is useful for drainage purposes. It can be used to line drainage ditches so that they do not wash away. In landfill sites they will support the soil whilst allowing water to pass though. Impermeable membranes are used to line dams and reservoirs or as a cover to prevent evaporation. To increase flexibility for the uses of geotextiles it would be useful to have narrow strips and these can be cut from standard rolls on a large scale. When very big surfaces need to be covered they can also be sown together. Printing is also possible on many different types of this fabric.
