SEO It’s a new year, which is a good time to consider doing something new. If you have a website, but not much else, consider adding a blog. To do that, though, you need to determine your purpose for the blog outside of that goal. Determining the purpose of your blog calls for evaluating your company and the image you want to project. Ask yourself though, is this what customers are looking for? Do they want to be entertained, informed, or both? You may decide you need to be an educational blogger. A good place to start is to look at any questions previous customers have asked. Could you write a helpful blog on any of those topics? Also, look for topics related to, but not directly about your industry that could be of interest. As for image, are you a company that markets to young people, or to families? Is your product or service a necessity, or a luxury? Determine what you want customers to think of you, and craft your blogs with a voice that projects that feeling. Do you want to be thought of as a solid, trustworthy company? Then write with some authority, but be honest about what you know, and how you can help. Be willing to direct people to other non- competitive sources if there is a small point you aren’t confident discussing. Are you a company that wants to be likeable and fun? Use anecdotes and a more conversational approach, but always tie it in with relevant facts and helpful information. Pattern: You have to develop a pattern for your blog posts, and be consistent. Have a regular schedule for blog posts and stick to it. Whether it’s once a month (which really won’t do much for your SEO) or once a week, let people know they can always look for a regularly scheduled post from you. It may seem hard to stick with it at first and not every blog is going to be your best work. Just remember, it’s not a sprint. It takes time to build up a following and to pull in responses. Personality: This may sound a bit like what we talked about in purpose, but it goes further than developing a voice. There are a lot of blogs out there. Don’t be afraid of letting a little personality show through in your blogs. Reading cold, hard facts gets old. Relax and do what feels natural. Some blogs are humorous, but not everyone can do that effectively either.
